Hey Vivi-

Saw your earlier note about a large animal rescue class--the folks at Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue do courses at KHP in August each year. They also have some scheduled at EKU earlier in the year. To see their full schedule go to http://www.tlaer.org/training.htm. Here's a summary of a course to give you an idea of what all it entails: http://www.thehorse.com/viewarticle.aspx?ID=6711. I audited a bit last year and it was a GREAT course--highly recommended! Hope this helps! Keep in touch!

I just goggled Tennessee Horse Council. They don't have a website but they are located in College Grove, Tn. and have 2 phone numbers: 615-395-7650 615-297-3200

Maybe they can help you out with some money?

Wow what a great report! VIP's don't like to be told what they should or should not be doing....I've learned that through work....ai ai ai..

We don't have a DART or a SART team here in Minnesota but EARS/UAN volunteers come out in droves for drills. My first pet drill was last Fall. But to tell you frankly I wouldn't belong to a DART or a SART team. I belong to the Mn. Horse Council team but it's not connected to any government agency.

Our VOAD group is a great group: Salvation Army, Red Cross and other human folk agencies. MHC is the only large animal group. MHC got stung several summers back in Northern Mn. after a flood...a saddle club was taking up the reins and responsibility of taking care of the large animals and storing the donated hay. That's when a Un. of Mn. Extension agent got in there and not one horse owner ever saw any of the hay that was BOUGHT because all the cows got it. AHA and HSUS sent MHC big checks to send to this county to help out UNDER the agreement with MHC that this person look for donated hay from surrounding areas not affected by the flood....several weeks later he calls and wants more money....he had been given $4,000 and it was GONE already. He spent it on a hay dealer in Southern Mn. instead of getting it up in his territory. Our contact person told him "no more money....you didn't do what we asked you to do first and then spend the money IF you needed to...." Later on that summer we found out that the horses never saw a blade of that hay. I complained to our HSEM guy in St. Paul and he nearly took my head off and defended the guy......Several months later this same HSEM guy was a little nicer to me at another EOC training event and said "you folks really did a great job, thank you".

We started out on our own back in 1997 with no help from HSEM, FEMA, HSUS, AHA or any other government agency....just a lot of volunteers like yourself and your friends made all the difference in the world for horses and cattle a like.

Keep up the great job.....I do recommend joining a VOAD group but as far as a DART or SART team I would really look into it big time before committing yourself to it.

Hi,
My name is Marian Robinson from Golden Valley, Mn. I was wondering what was happening down in Tennessee and other areas affected by the storms until I got the email from the Horse Magazine and saw your article. I'm captain of our Mn. Horse Council Disaster Response Team for 10 years now. We got started in 1997 during the Grand Forks flood of the century. We work with mostly donated hay and feed but when that runs out our Horse Council comes up with a truck load. The list of folks we have helped in large over the years.
You are such a great person to be doing all this for your neighbors. When I read about the DART folks in your county I almost laughed.....government agencies are like that. I'm secretary of our MnVOAD group and sometimes I wonder if we are doing any good....but then most of them are human services like Salvation Army, Red Cross, etc. Our horse group is the only large animal group in MnVOAD. I'm also a member of ADC....animal disaster coalition...again mostly for pets and we are the only equine group so we arer constantly having to prove ourselves.

Hi,
I overnight board horses in the center of Oklahoma and I will make room out in my pasture for 3 horses for a duration of 5 months. Do not worry about feed I will take that responsibility on myself. We are retired and can not do more than that but I live in a community of horse properties and know several homes that would take a couple each so perhaps we can place as many as 9 right here in one spot. You can contact me at Bridle Ridge Farm, Terese Eby 405-324-4018 or 405-664-8003. Please make sure they all have shots and coggins as I have two quarter horses myself. Thanks, Terese

Hi,
I'm not surprised at your comment about DART. Anything that is a government agency always has red tape. I'm glad you folks are doing so much for the animals. I'm captain of the Mn. Horse Council Disaster Response Team and we rely on volunteers, who are mostly strangers, pop out of the woodwork to help our communities. I'm the MnVOAD secretary for our state VOAD. Interesting being the only large animal group in the bunch. We've been helping Mn. since 1997's Northern Mn. flood of the century in Grand Rapids, Mn. You can email me anytime.
